The Joint Commission: Sentinel Event Alert 54 - Safe Use of HIT

June 12, 2015 - The Joint Commission recently published Sentinel Event Alert #54, which suggests actions to promote the safe socio-technical use of health information technology (HIT) in organizations. They also recommend that users of HIT pay attention to this list of related Joint Commission requirements and foster awareness of potential patient safety risks. Sentinel Event Alert #54 was preceded by Alert #42, which suggested actions to help prevent patient harm related to the implementation and use of HIT and converging technologies.

To help physicians, nurses, and other clinicians orchestrate and deliver safe patient care, MEDITECH works with its customers to:

  • Identify, report, and resolve HIT-related safety concerns
  • Catch failures between workflow and technology before they fail
  • Find ways to reduce the likelihood of future HIT-related adverse outcomes.
We encourage our customers to review The Joint Commission’s alerts discussed above and to take their free online course, “Investigating and Preventing Health Information Technology-related Patient Safety Events.” As part of continual improvement, MEDITECH reviews the socio-technical design of their applications to find ways to reduce risk of patient safety events.

Please do not hesitate to contact your MEDITECH applications specialist with questions or concerns.
