MEDITECH Response to Report on Information Blocking

April 27, 2015This month, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) issued a report to Congress on the subject of Health Information Blocking.

MEDITECH doesn’t believe we have contributed in any meaningful manner to Health Information Blocking. We have never even contemplated charging transaction fees, and our charges for interfaces are entirely commensurate with the costs. MEDITECH has always been, and will always remain, deeply committed to the advancement of better, safer, high-quality care for all patients. Over our 45-year history, we have consistently demonstrated this commitment, and we will continue to do so as our industry continues to embrace new interoperability initiatives. In recent months, we have expanded our interoperability endeavors to include participation in the Argonaut Project and membership in CommonWell. We’re proud that our EHR exchanges over 300 billion data transactions per year, and that we have created over 200,000 data-exchanging interfaces. We support this unprecedented level of  clinical information exchange between vendor EHR solutions because we want to enable caregivers with access to important data that may be very relevant in treatment decisions.

Ultimately, we believe that information about a patient belongs to the patient. We believe that providing timely, relevant information to caregivers, which enhances their ability to deliver safe, comprehensive care to their patients, is critical to our mission: to enable customers to provide higher quality care, with greater efficiency, to more people, at a lower cost.
